Located in the North Central Province of the country, Anuradhapura is the first capital city of Sri Lanka established in 377 BC by King Pandukabhaya. The civilization of Sinhalese has begun with this and it was based on the Malwathu Oya River. After the arrival of Buddhism from India during the rural time of King Devanampiyatissa, the culture, governance method, and law has been dramatically changed. Irrigation systems with unbelievable technology and buildings with rich architecture still remain as ruins for the modern world. Sacred places such as Ruwanwelisaya Dagebo, Thuparamaya Dagebo, Mirisawetiya Dagaba, Lovamahapaya, Jethawana Stupa, Aukana Buddha Statue, Mahamevna Uyana, Isurumuni Viharaya temple are the most prominent from the thousands. The Tissa Wewa, Nuwara Wewa, Kala Wewa, and Padaviya Wewa are still functioning and used for agriculture and for irrigation systems in Anuradhapura.
