This port-based developed city was known as ‘Gimhathiththa’ before the invasion of the Portuguese colonial times in the 16th century. Galle is located in the southern part of the island and was the main port on the island. The Galle Fort which has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO was built by the Portuguese in the 17 century and extended and renovated by Dutch invaders. The fort has a beautiful overlooking of the Indian Ocean; currently, there is a maritime museum inside the fort that tells the whole legend of this world heritage site. Galle Fort is the largest one in Asia that was built by European colonials. Today Galle has become one of the major tourist destinations in Sri Lanka and there are lots of luxury hotels, leisure activities, and other facilities developed around the area.
