Located in the northern part of the country with a peninsula geographically, the city of Jaffna has a history as long as the 6th century BC. At that time the area was known as Naka-Diva, Nagadipa in chronicles; the second visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka was to arrive at Nagadipa(Jaffna) to appease the war between two Naga Kings over the gem-set throne. The site that happened in this incident became a Buddhist temple called Nagadipa Purana Viharaya. Jaffna Fort has been built by the Portuguese during their invasion and expanded by the Dutch colonial after they captured it. In Dutch colonial times, south Indians has been brought into Jaffna for tobacco cultivation; nowadays Jaffna is mainly inhabited by Tamils. So the main culture of the area is Tamil; the Nallur Kovil and Nainatheevu Kovil are famous and major Tamil cultural centers in Jaffna.
