Minneriya National Park is located in the North central province, 67 kilometers away from Anuradhapura and 37 kilometers away from Polonnaruwa. The park has been declared a National Park in 1997 to protect catchment areas of the Minneriya tank and wildlife in the surrounding areas. It has a high density of Sri Lankan Elephants; it’s a dread season feed area for elephants from Matale, Trincomalee, and Polonnaruwa. Large gatherings of elephants can be seen frequently around the Minneriya Tank; so this is another paradise for elephant lovers. Other wildlife like endemic monkeys purple-faced langur and toque macaque, and large herbivorous mammals such as Sri Lankan sambar deer, and Sri Lankan axis deer frequent the park.
