Second Capital of Ancient Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa is the second capital city of ancient Sri Lanka that has been established by King Vijayabahu I in 1070 after defeating the Chola invaders. King Vijayabahu and his elder son King Parakrama Bahu have made the Polonnaruwa one of the most prominent eras of Sri Lankan History. In this era, you will witness a lot of Buddhist sacred places that have been built with unbelievable architecture and technology. Rankoth Vehera, Watadageya, Hatadageya, Pothgul Viharaya, Thiwanka Pilimageya, and Galviharaya are the most popular among tourists. Parakrama Samudraya is the largest water reservoir that has been built in Sri Lankan history by King Paracramabahu. Because of its glory, the Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
