‘Wasgamuwa’ is the name derived from the Sinhala words ‘walls’ for the Sloth Bear and ‘Gamuwa’ for the wood; this park is located in Matale and Polonnaruwa districts. The area has been formed as a National Park for the displaced wildlife due to Mahaweli Development Project. Like other wildlife national parks in Sri Lanka Wasgamuwa also owns a high density of Sri Lankan Elephants. Other than the elephants, there are 23 species of mammals including endemic golden palm civet, purple-faced langur, and toque macaque monkeys can be found in the park. While the water buffalo and axis deer frequently seen in the park, the leopard and sloth bears are rarely can be found. With more than 150 floral species Wasgamuwa owns the reputation as one of the highest biodiversity among the forest reservoirs in Sri Lanka.
